Just the very basics needed?
If you already have a computer, instruments, cables, mics etc. then to get started with the actual recording is not expensive at all, but around $200.00. The next two items are the most important. The Reaper software can be downloaded for free and even after the month trial period, the software still works. Just a bit of nag ware. The trial version is not cut down in any way and all functionality of the software is completely intact. The software license is very affordable. It's based on your income in the music world, and with some type of either USB mixer or input device, you're pretty much ready to start recording. Have to admit, it's not the easiest software to learn, but very logical once you start to get the hang of it. There is so much control in the software it takes a while to learn all these things, but certainly worth it. The next two items can produce very high quality recordings. Clicking on the images will direct you to where the items can be downloaded or purchased.

Main two items

Reaper Software - (DAW) Digital Audio Workstation
Next, the computer needed and the software that was chosen. The computer should probably have no less than a 2.2GZ dual core processor, 4GB of ram (larger amount of ram if running later versions of Windows or Mac software) with plenty of hard drive storage space to be able to write out multiple WAVE files for the different instruments being recorded. The software that was chosen was Reaper and will either run on a Windows PC or Mac system.

There is a bit of a learning curve using Reaper, but it's got very professional features and the vast amount of VST plugins (virtual digital sampled instruments) which are available everywhere on the net. A large number of them have no charge to download, use, and install them. Total track capacity is most likely ram and used effects related. But even using Windows XP with 4GB of ram, you can most likely get up to 32 tracks. More if using later versions of Windows with more ram. The Reaper Documentation can be found here.

When Reaper was first set up, there was an issue with which type of input USB device to use. Had a friend that had recently done an entire CD using Reaper as their main recording software, even though the final mix was done at a studio using 'Pro Tools'. This issue had to do with latency or delays when recording using the FX effects input to add tracks as a virtual instrument like brass or strings etc., via MIDI. These latency issues all disappeared when using a better USB device. So ended up using the Akai EIE for the USB input device, and all the latency issues disappeared.

The unusual looking input jacks accept XLR and 1/4" phone.

Akai Professional EIE Mixer
This is the USB input/output/MIDI device that was chosen due to the extremely low latency issues (timing delays) when recording, especially when using FX effects or MIDI Virtual instruments in record mode. Other than having a true multi channel USB/MIDI mixer, this is the next best thing if no more than 4 inputs or outputs are needed for recording at any one time. When looking at the back of this USB device, you can see the support for 3 more additional USB ports as well as MIDI in/out, plus 4 1/4" phone jacks for both input and output. There was no driver that needed to be loaded for this device, so other DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) should be able to see and use this device easily, regardless of the Operating system and DAW being used.

High latency issues (timing delays) were experienced with both the Scarlett 2i2 and Tascam USB recording devices when using MIDI Virtual Instruments, FX effects or VST Plugins when in record mode. However, these units did very well in totally dry recording modes. But just the same, there are times when we would like to be able to record using these methods, so we will not use these USB devices.

Alesis 3630 Dual Channel Compressor - Limiter with Gate
Since its introduction, the 3630 Compressor has become the most popular dynamics processor ever made. The reason is easy to understand: it provides two independent full-featured compressor/ limiters in one rack space while offering excellent sonic quality for any application from studio recording to live sound or broadcast. The 3630 offers Ratio, Threshold, Attack, Release, and Decay controls to customize its compression response for even the toughest signals. You can also choose between RMS and Peak compression styles, plus Hard and Soft Knee dynamic curves for every application from subtle gain control to in-your-face punch.

As an independent dual-channel compressor, the 3630 offers separate controls for two different source signals. Plus, two fully independent gates with threshold and rate controls allow you to easily and efficiently stifle unwanted ambient noise. Other advanced dynamics processing features such as precise signal metering, a sidechain for keying or ducking effects and stereo linkable operation make the 3630 the most powerful compressor in its class.

Zoom R-16 USB Mixer
Some of the features of this mixer are; there are 2 built in microphones on inputs 7 and 8,  2 phantom powered inputs on 5 and 6, and the control surface feature which allows you to be able to control the sliders from the mixer itself, which also shows changes to the sliders in the (DAW) software. The inputs can accept either XLR mic inputs or 1/4" phone jacks. This mixer can also run on batteries or a power supply which can make this little mixer portable, not requiring a computer to store the data at all, but record directly to the Zoom itself. It can handle up to a 32GB SD card for storing recordings. At which which point at a later time you could easily transfer the WAV files directly to your computer. When plugged in directly to the computer, the USB supplied cable supplies both data and the mixer with power from the computer, not needing to use the external power supply at all. The mixer can record up to 8 channels simultaneously at any one time. This little mixer does not have EQ, but there are VST plugins for the DAW that have support for even good parametric EQ. Quite a few of them are free. There are drivers available for this hardware that run on both Windows and Mac computers.

Stedman PROSCREEN XL
DESCRIPTION: The Stedman Proscreen XL is a professional advanced pop filter for vocal applications. The Proscreen XL is made from our exclusive patented material that eliminates pops far more effectively than fabric filters. The Proscreen XL allows unobstructed passage of high frequencies helping to maintain the important detail in vocal recordings. In addition to its sonic advantages, the Proscreen XL can be easily washed between sessions. With the Proscreen XL in place, average recording signal levels can be maximized without the risk of clipping caused by bursts (extremely important with digital formats). The Proscreen XL has a large 6 inch diameter screen with rubber bezel and includes a 13 inch flexible gooseneck with an extended adjustable clamp to allow easy adjustment and placement. NEW! The Proscreen XL includes our improved clamping knob with nylon tip to prevent the scratching of equipment.

HOW IT WORKS: The angle of the large louvered openings in the Proscreen XL material allows sound to pass while diverting air bursts from vocal pops in a downward direction out of the back of the screen. Even extremely dynamic close vocal work will not allow bursts to reach the microphone. For the best results the Proscreen XL should be placed between the vocalist and the microphone with at least 2 inches between the screen and the microphone. The vocalist must be on the Stedman label side of the Proscreen XL to be effective. To clean, immerse the entire screen material into a mild solution of detergent and rinse with warm water. Wipe off excess water with a towel and allow to air dry before the next use. An antibacterial detergent may be used to increase effectiveness of cleaning.

Stedman PROSCREEN XL Specifications

  1. Screen diameter: 6 (15cm)

Carvin VT16 Vintage Tube Guitar Amp Head
The VT16 micro-head takes the great features and tone of the popular Vintage16 combo, and puts them in a compact head. This is the low-wattage, "boutique" recording tube amp so many players are looking for, and everything about this little amp oozes tone. The SOAK control goes from stout clean tones with rich midrange body to a filling upper-midrange snarl defining its tweed sound. The ALL tube design incorporates V1 12AX7 preamp and two EL84 output tubes. The power amp in its normal "PENTODE" mode puts out a crisp 16 watts. The "TRIODE" mode produces 5 watts of incredibly sweet spongy harmonics, ideal for both mic'd recording and small stage rigs. Wide bass, mid and treble control range, combined with classic long-tail digital reverb (not a spring reverb) puts an amazing range of sound at your fingertips. Selectable 8 ohm/16 ohm impedance switch, along with silent mode for line-out operation. Made to last, with a quality plywood enclosure covered in vintage tweed. A very strange issue with this amp is; the amp can make a strange buzz sound if the Reverb knob is not turned all the way down before shutting off the power switch. It's easy to overlook this design flaw after hearing the tone this amp makes. However, Carvin does need to get that fixed.

    Specifications
  1. All tube design - two 12AX7 preamp tubes, two EL84 output power tubes
  2. 1 Meg Passive tone controls for broad adjustment range.
  3. Front controls: SOAK, VOLUME, BASS, MID, TREBLE and REVERB

19 Inch Rack Mount Crown XLS 1000 Power Amplifier

Can be acquired for around $300.00.

Crown XLS 1000 Power Amplifier
Serious performance! Five decades of power amp innovation have been rolled into Crown's impressive new XLS Series of amplifiers. Each amplifiers features flexibility you'll appreciate, including multiple inputs, so you can plug in anything and play anywhere. First of all, these beasts each weigh less than 12 lbs. - compared to many 40-lb. competitors - yet they sport integrated crossovers, an advanced switched-mode power supply, and Peak-x limiters to protect your entire system. All in all, engineered to meet the most demanding of audio needs - yet priced to fit comfortably into any gigging band's budget - the XLS Series represents a powerful argument for flexibility, performance, and value.

At the heart of each XLS Series power amplifier - the XLS 1000, the XLS 1500, the XLS 2000, and the XLS 2500 - is the integrated DriveCore technology. Class D amps are known for their high efficiency and for being well suited to drive difficult, reactive loads... such as subwoofers. Yet, one problem Class D amps have is that they can suffer impaired performance when they're being fed by unstable AC lines. To overcome this issue, Crown came up with DriveCore - it's a hybrid analog-digital integrated circuit that provides an extremely wide tolerance of sagging or "dirty" AC line conditions. That means, even if you plug into an unreliable wall outlet, you can enjoy consistent performance without affecting audio quality. In short, demanding equipment like lighting rigs and backline gear won't interfere with the sound - as it should be.

Other features on the XLS 1000 - which you're looking at now - include Crown's PureBand Crossover System. With this system, you can vary the crossover frequency, choosing any point between 50Hz and 3kHz on 1/12 octave centers. And with four crossover modes to choose from, you know your needs will be covered. Finally, the XLS 1000 features Crown's Peak-x limiters to help you achieve higher SPL with less audible artifacts. What it comes down to, is that you'll enjoy less distortion, less shutdowns, and maximum safe power delivered to your important speaker investments.

Crown XLS 1000 Power Amplifier Features at a Glance:
  1. XLS High Performance, Lightweight Class D amp weighs less than 11 lbs.
  2. Integrated PureBand Crossover System for better performance and control.
  3. Peak-x Limiters provide maximum output while protecting your speakers.
  4. XLR, TRS 1/4", and RCA inputs provide outstanding flexibility.
  5. Connectivity Out - Wired or Banana Plug.
  6. Efficient forced-air fans prevent excessive thermal buildup.
  7. Electronically balanced XLR inputs; touchproof binding post and Speakon outputs.
  8. Precision detented level controls, power switch, power LED, and six LEDs which indicate signal, clip and fault for each channel.
  9. Provides 215W per channel at 8 ohms, 350W per channel at 4 ohms, and 700W at 8 ohms bridged.

Fender Rumble 25 - 25W 1x8" Bass Combo Amp - Really great sound.
25-watt 1x8" Bass Combo Amp with Overdrive.

The Rumble 25 combo's sound-shaping tools let you sculpt the sound, including contour and a 3-band EQ. These give you a lot of flexibility to find your signature sound. Need a little extra teeth for a particular song or passage? The Rumble 25's built-in overdrive has your back.

The Rumble 25 combo helps you practice. It's stuffed with a handy aux input that you can plug your iPod, laptop, drum machine, or other practice gear into. And there's an 1/4" headphone jack, so you can practice late into the night. A single 8" speaker for serious punch.
