ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Tremendous interest has been shown by SpinRite's users in utilizing SpinRite in many ways which would normally violate our simple "use it on your own drives only" implicit license. We have therefore created a number of additional license plans to suit our customer's extended needs: o Consultant License -- Consultants who wish to repair and revitalize systems belonging to others may do so by executing our CONSULTING USE LICENSING AGREEMENT and paying a $10 fee each time SpinRite is used on another system. SpinRite must not, of course, be installed onto those drives. o Corporate Site License -- Corporations wishing to install and use SpinRite on more than the number of systems for which copies were purchased can do so by executing our CORPORATE SITE LICENSE AGREEMENT and paying a one-time license fee of $25 for each additional system supported. o Systems House License -- Systems Houses, VAR's, VAD's, and others who wish to only use SpinRite in-house to prepare systems for sale may do so by executing our SYSTEMS RESELLER LICENSE AGREEMENT and then enclosing our "SpinRite Was Used Here" promotional literature with the system they're selling which we provide at no cost. ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Despite our literature's lack of clarity, SpinRite operates PERFECTLY with most of the hard disk partitioning software we and our users have used. It's known to operate perfectly with the DISK MANAGER software from OnTrack, the SPEEDSTOR software from Storage Dimensions, VFEATURE DELUXE from Golden Bow, and Everex's EVERDISK package. However, SpinRite will NOT recognize partitions created by the partitioning software included in the Adaptec 2372 Controller's ROM BIOS. After analyzing their scheme we strongly advise AGAINST its use since users will undoubtedly encounter other problems with it other than SpinRite. SpinRite and MEMORY RESIDENT software. ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ There is no way for us to overstate the importance of operating SpinRite ONLY in a system WITHOUT ANY extraneous software in memory. SpinRite's delicate timing and hard disk use is affected by ANY other software which monitors and/or taps into the system's resources. Even seemingly harmless things like mouse drivers, 3.5 inch floppy drivers, and resident word finders interfere with SpinRite. ------------------------------ PLEASE MAKE NO EXCEPTIONS! ------------------------------ CREATE A SEPARATE BOOTABLE DISKETTE containing JUST your operating system, a "configured" copy of SPINRITE.COM, and whatever hard disk partitioning software your system uses, if any. Place the partitioning software driver's name in the diskette's CONFIG.SYS file, and SPINRITE's name in the diskette's AUTOEXEC.BAT. Then every two or three months, when you want to re-run SpinRite to renew and re-scrub your hard disk, simply boot with THAT diskette and SpinRite will be ready to go in a completely clean system. The IMPORTANCE of DEEPEST TESTING when changing interleaves. ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ We can not over stress the importance of using SpinRite's deepest pattern testing when a hard disk drive's sector interleave setting is being changed. This is CRITICAL since the physical locations occupied by the sectors of DOS's clusters are all being changed. You wouldn't want to place your GOOD DATA into a BAD SECTOR! This is prevented by performing DEEP TESTING during an interleave change. RLL-to-MFM SECTOR TRANSLATION: ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ An ever-increasing number of computer systems are utilizing RLL encoding. The good news is that RLL really does work now, it provides a 50% storage capacity increase over the same drive with MFM encoding and can potentially deliver 150% of MFM's data transfer rate, (depending upon the drive's achievable sector interleave.) SpinRite has worst-case data test patterns, which were specifically designed for testing these new RLL systems, which it automatically brings to bare when operating on an RLL system. The bad news is that a few designers completely hide their use of RLL encoding with a scheme known as "sector translation." Sector Translation causes a drive to appear as MFM with 17 sectors and 50% more cylinders. The additional RLL sectors are "translated" to appear as additional MFM cylinders. ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ IT IS COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE FOR SPINRITE TO **SAFELY** ³ ³ RE-INTERLEAVE A DRIVE WHICH UTILIZES SECTOR-TRANSLATION ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ The HP Vectra, Compaq Portable III, Mountain Computer and Verbatim 30Mb HardCards are all known to utilize sector translation. Additionally, the 16-bit Western Digital WD1003-RAH and -RA2 16-bit controllers, and the 8-bit WD1002-27X utilize sector translation. SpinRite will safely detect their use of sector translation and will correctly refuse to change their sector interleaves. All other SpinRite functions such as deep pattern test scrubbing will continue to function fully. The good news is that the popular 8-bit WD1002-27X RLL controller can have its sector translation disabled simply by moving a few jumpers. If you receive SpinRite's message about Sector Translation while using a WD-27X controller, please see pages 36-37 of the SpinRite manual for re-jumpering instructions. SPINRITE INCOMPATIBILITIES ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ AWESOME I/O CARD - It's awesome indeed. So awesome in fact that we're completely keeping our hands off any system which has been "awesomized." The concepts used by SpinRite and the AWESOME I/O card are similar but incompatible. SpinRite detects the presence of any AWESOME I/O CARD and won't proceed. (We're impressed with the "awesome" technology but wouldn't feel comfortable using it ourselves. Good luck.) TOSHIBA'S HARD DISK LAP TOPS - Have taken a clever design approach which is incompatible with our non-destructive low-level formatting. This is unfortunate since SpinRite could TRIPLE the transfer rate of the Toshiba Lap Tops. If demand warrants we may introduce a special version of SpinRite for Toshiba Lap Top Computer owners who would like to triple their hard disk's speed. Let us know if you're such a person. (Naturally, SpinRite will detect and abstain from re- interleaving these Toshiba machines.) PERSTOR - If you are using a PerStor controller when SpinRite tells you that it is unable to low-level format your drive, simply add the word "PERSTOR" to SpinRite's command to eliminate the problem. PETER NORTON'S SI speed index utility and our own original SPINTEST revolution measuring utility will not correctly measure the "after SpinRite" improved performance of your hard disk. For this reason we have included a new version of SPINTEST.COM program on the master SpinRite diskette. You may use it to quickly verify the throughput of any system before and after using SpinRite. This version of SpinRite makes the Norton SI and original Spintest programs completely invalid. PRIAM HARD DISK PRODUCTS - Are COMPLETELY COMPLETELY INCOMPATIBLE !!! ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ ** DO NOT USE SPINRITE IF YOU USE PRIAM'S EDVR.SYS PARTITIONING SOFTWARE! ** ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ SpinRite is philosophically incompatible with the approach which has been taken by PRIAM. Their installation manual states: "Don't run any formatting program on your PRIAM drive. In particular, don't use these standard IBM programs: FORMAT, FDISK, IBM Diagnostics. Formatting programs can destroy configuration data recorded on your PRIAM drive." Well, they're sure right about that! You **MUST NOT** not use SpinRite with PRIAM'S EDVR.SYS partitioning product. To make matters even more frustrating, PRIAM drives are interleaved wrong and SpinRite would help them tremendously! SpinRite DOES NOT DETECT the presence of this PRIAM problem so please DON'T let SpinRite near any PRIAM DRIVES. ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Thanks for purchasing SpinRite.
